School Terror

Description:

This course provides practical knowledge and understanding of school terrorism and safety threats. This course will focus primarily on planning and preparedness as methods through which school administrators and safety officials can mitigate the hazards and vulnerabilities their schools face. In addition, the course will offer guidance on local, State, and Federal resources available to assist in planning and preparedness.

 

Objectives:

Upon completion of this course, students will be able to:

  • Identify the phases of the Emergency Management Process
  • Describe the key steps in the Crisis Planning Process
  • Examine the types of hazards and vulnerabilities that school officials must consider when developing an Emergency Operations Plan (EOP)
  • Identify external and internal threats and the steps necessary to mitigate them
  • Analyze the relationship between hazards, vulnerability, and risk
  • Describe the principles of crime prevention through environmental design (CPTED) and their application in a school environment
  • Analyze past incidents of school violence in order to understand vulnerabilities and mitigate the effects of future acts of violence
  • Explain the difference between making a threat and threatening behavior
  • Discuss strategies for preventing and mitigating incidents of targeted violence

Audience:

School and campus personnel, first responders, public health officials, city and regional planners, and emergency officials

Six (6) hours
